Strasburg should get used to struggle

June 1st, 2009 by Heyi Gu

Struggle is bound to ride shotgun with Strasburg during his fast-track journey through the upper reaches of the minor leagues and into the big leagues. Barring a cataclysmic turn of events, he will be the first pick in the June 9 draft, going to the abysmal Washington Nationals. The hitters he faces will be professionals, beginning the day he reports to whatever minor league outpost the Nats send him after he signs for the most money ever handed an amateur.
Eventually he’ll face Albert Pujols(notes) and David Wright(notes) and Ryan Howard(notes).Struggle will clear its throat and make its voice known.
Comparatively, Strasburg heard only whispers Friday against Virginia in what is almost certain to be the flame-throwing right-hander’s last college game.Virginia beat San Diego State 5-1 in an NCAA regional opener at UC Irvine, handing Strasburg his first loss since last summer’s Olympics.

Hamilton fears continued struggle

June 1st, 2009 by Heyi Gu

World champion Lewis Hamilton says he will continue to struggle to get near this season’s front-runners because his McLaren cannot yet truly compete.
The 24-year-old Englishman made up ground in Monaco on Sunday largely because six drivers crashed out or retired - but, despite being held up in traffic, he did manage to showcase his raw driving ability during some laps of Monte Carlo’s tight, twisting street circuit.
Hamilton finished ninth but was off the pace and lapped in Barcelona, where the circuit is very similar to that of Turkey in terms of the demands it puts on a car.
Hamilton now sits ninth in the drivers’ championship, 42 points behind Brawn leader Jenson Button, and the Englishman tipped his compatriot to take the 2009 title after his convincing win in Monaco.

He said: “I have agreed to leave Milan. The decision was by mutual consent. But a move to London is not certain yet.”

Leonardo will be officially named as Milan’s new coach on Monday.

Nadal is out of Roland Garros

June 1st, 2009 by Heyi Gu

Nadal, bidding for a record fifth successive French Open crown, slumped to his first defeat at Roland Garros after winning all of his 31 matches since his 2005 debut. His 2-6 7-6 (7-2) 4-6 6-7 (2-7) fourth-round loss was made harder to swallow as it came against a man he described as one of the most unpopular in the locker room after an acrimonious Wimbledon clash in 2007.
“It’s not a tragedy, I had to lose one day,” said Nadal, who had routed Soderling 6-1 6-0 at the Rome Masters just a month ago.
“I must accept my defeats with the same level of calm that I accept my victories,”
“He didn’t surprise me because I know how he plays and how dangerous he can be. I didn’t play my best. I played very short and I couldn’t attack. I made it easy for him.”

NHL as a fight club this night

June 1st, 2009 by Heyi Gu

The National Hockey League (NHL)rule book spells out 87 rules and hundreds of sub-rules that govern its game. There is an 88th rule that goes unwritten: The league’s braintrust can invalidate any of the others, so long as it behooves their short-sighted and selfish interests.
No group of management has so mangled its sport as the NHL, and its never-ending quest for redemption and relevance turned laughable again Sunday night following Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Joe Louis Arena. The league overturned an automatic one-game suspension handed down to Pittsburgh star Evgeni Malkin(notes), whose post-whistle elbow and subsequent fight with Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg(notes) earned him an instigator penalty.
Because Malkin’s antics came with 19 seconds remaining in the Penguins’ 3-1 loss that left them facing a 2-0 series deficit, it triggered Rule 47.22, which hands down the one-game ban to players who instigate a fight in the game’s final five minutes. It is a rule to prevent the kind of thuggery and frustration spilling that Malkin displayed. The punishment fits.
